 From May 01-04th 2008, the Ethiopian Catholic Church organized the Eucharistic Congress Celebration. As you may know, while the worldwide is in year 2008, in Ethiopia we are in Year 2000. That’s the reason why that celebration was called Eucharistic Congress Celebration of the Ethiopian Millennium (Jubilee year 2000). The Celebration was accompanied with different spiritual preparation. For this especial event of the Ethiopian Catholic Church Millennium (Jubilee) Year 2000 Celebration, His Holiness, the Supreme Pontiff Benedict XVI appointed His Eminence Cardinal Ivan Dias, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, as His especial Envoy to Ethiopia.
The faithful from the whole dioceses were invited and each diocese was represented by about 100 faithful especially those from far places. The first three days program from 1st-3rd of May 2008 took place in the Archdiocese Nativity Cathedral of Addis Ababa with different spiritual exercises, prayers, preaching, songs, and Eucharistic adoration. The main celebration took place today 4th of May 2008 in the open field of the Salesians of Donbosco Mary Help of Christian Parish Compound under tents. The Eucharistic Celebration ended with a heavy rain which can be called God blessing. All the Bishops, Priests, Brothers, Sisters and Faithful were gathered around the Cardinal Ivan Dias to celebrate that event. There was not Eucharistic Celebration in any Parish. Every body was invited to attend that Mass. Even tough the Catholic Church is not known as an official religion in Ethiopia, some thousands of people were present.
