Holy: hãl – whole – well – health – healing - halo – hello – 1- During a lecture of Fr. Anselm Prior OFM (9th May 2009), on Dreams and our Personal Growth, at Saint Sophia Pretoria, he mentioned the link that exists among words like Holy and whole, health and hello. In this article I am trying to use his intuition and develop it in my own way! 2- I would like to share something that I did not recognize before; especially concluding this biennium on holiness, in our Consolata Family, it seems that it comes at the right time to understand better life itself and our choice. 3- In my understanding I can say that holiness must be a goal for each human being, not just the ones who already started a religious journey or something similar. 4- Reading the Gospels, I notice that there is a contradiction in the way of living towards holiness, between Pharisees and Jesus: a) Holy for the Pharisees is to be “separated” from the sinners. b) Holy for Jesus is to be among people and sinners and to get them back to collaborate in the Plan of the Father. 5- Body: it has different parts, each part has its own function, but there is only one body, and a healthy body means wholeness; we can apply it also to a community and its members (year of St. Paul). 6- Hello is to wish good health to the people we meet, to give our support in going on in the journey of life. 7- In this understanding, I can say also that “Heaven” is that stage when we reach that wholeness in fullness: individually, in community and deeply within. Healthy greetings of Holiness When we meet with friends and people, every day, we greet them with a hello, that it’s an expression related to hãl and to health, so we are wishing to others a good health! Good health for the body, for the spirit, for the mind, for the psyche, etc. touching all the dimensions of the person. In this way, we wish for the people to become holy, to improve their being, encouraging them to use properly the parts of their bodies, their organism, their being, etc. The greeting hello can be interpreted also as sharing my good energies with the other one, so I can contribute in a mutual healing process. Good friendship and love among people is a kind of exchange of healthy energies to help each other and healing ourselves. It is a kind of medication to heal the individuals and the society. Hello is linked also with wholeness: this can be a way to see the organism as one reality. Although there are different parts the organism is healthy when it is kept united, better saying whole, according to certain natural rules wanted by God from the beginning. Going on in this reasoning, the expressions: <hello – wholeness – health> are related, thanks to the common root that is the word hãl. We can also say that holiness is a goal for each human being, not just the ones who already started a religious journey or something similar. When we see Jesus among the sinners (Mt.9:10-13), we see the holy one who wants everybody to be holy. Jesus the healthy and wholeness, as individual, who wants healthy and united people as one wholeness in love. Jesus rediscovered for us the face of God as One, wholeness, and not shredding or separated like the Pharisees. Considering the human reality <Global situation> in South Africa, in Africa and in the world; our humanity is shredding and the faces of other gods <idols> are taking shape: Power, dictatorship, money, hedonism, racism, xenophobia, etc. are just some of them - human beings are sick. The world is sick also at other levels: geologically, weather, flora, fauna, etc. Till injustice exists there is no peace, and we don’t allow Jesus, the Prince of Peace to work properly among us! For sure the Grace of the Lord is more powerful than ourselves, but for the fact that he gave to each one of us the gift of freedom, he expects our collaboration to use properly that gift as well. It is obvious that the world and all of us need to be healed in a proper way, not through magical words, but through our commitment for Justice! For the wholeness of each individual and community, that is a “Healing Hello”! “I call you friends” (Jn.15:12-17) says Jesus; we now can say that he greets us saying “hello”. We know how difficult it is to communicate in friendship with our neighbour today <Local situation>. Discrimination, abuse, possession, and other human weaknesses, don’t allow us to say hello to one another. We know how to preach and to write, to celebrate the sacrament of Love in nice churches, but to say hello and to welcome people, to share some food or to shelter them, that is becomes difficult. We know how powerful the friendship and love towards the sick people is, the medication producing its effects especially if it is combined with genuine love, but often we have no time to stay with them. Hello must be related also to welcome, although probably there is not a common root for this two expressions. The image of the Church, the body of Christ, that we have from St. Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians, chapter 12, is a sign of health and wholeness and also consequence of welcoming people in his name. How are our Religious and Christian communities sacrament of this hello that Jesus brings also today to humanity? Some of our Christians say that the halo of sanctity belongs only to some select people, but now we can say that the hello of Jesus belongs to all humankind in so far as they are striving for wholeness! “I have come so that they may have life and have it to the full” (Jn.10:10). |
